Every site migration risks organic traffic, but most of the damage we see is preventable. It comes down to a short list of things that get skipped under deadline pressure.
Redirect mapping is the biggest one. A 1:1 redirect map from every old URL to its new equivalent isn't optional — it's the single highest-leverage thing you can do before launch. Skipping it, or mapping everything to the homepage "to be safe," is how sites lose 40% of their organic traffic in a month.
Second is crawl structure. If your new information architecture buries key pages three or four clicks from the homepage, expect your crawl budget and your rankings to suffer together.
Third, and most overlooked: structured data parity. If your old site had schema markup driving rich results, and the new one doesn't, you lose visibility even on pages that technically still rank.
None of this is exotic. It's discipline under deadline pressure, and it's why we run technical SEO as a formal gate before any migration goes live, not a cleanup task after.
